The Columbia River Gorge and adjacent Cascade Volcanoes, Washington and Oregon, USA

- Update and New Features

File Name: crg_upd1.zip
Author: Holger Sandmann, with additional models and textures by Larry Silsbee
Date of Release: May 2005

This update DOES NOT address any of the crashes or airport selection problems that some users have reported after installing cr_gorge.zip. My apologies for these issues but almost all of them are related to conflicting scenery add-ons or AFCAD files or missing default textures and thus are very much dependent on your personal FS setup. The only problem directly related to cr_gorge.zip is that for some users the Goto Airport menu gets "corrupted". I don't know exactly why this happens but it can be reliably fixed by either following the instructions in this Avsim thread - http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=121&topic_id=240404 - or uninstalling cr_gorge.zip.

This update DOES provide fixes for a few visual "bugs", specifically:

* autogen encroachment at Portland-Troutdale (KTTD) has been fixed
* land class around Portland-Troutdale has been adjusted to better represent its suburban/industrial character
* river and lake shorelines have been changed so that they will only turn white (e.g., "icy") if the adjacent land class texture has snow cover too
* added shorelines to more of the mid-size lakes
* fixed a water elevation glitch in the Columbia River near the John Day dam (actually outside of the cr_gorge.zip coverage area)

Better yet, this package includes a number of new landmarks and objects, modeled in wonderful detail by Larry Silsbee:

* five well-known waterfalls of the western Columbia River Gorge, including Multnomah Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.
* Multnomah Falls visitor center and bridge: see http://www.mind.net/dlmark/gorgemul.htm
* the Bridge of the Gods: see http://www.mind.net/dlmark/gorgebog.htm
* the Crown Point Vista House: see http://www.mind.net/dlmark/gorgecro.htm
* the Columbia River sternwheeler as AI vessel, which cruises the River above Bonneville Dam at Cascade Locks: see http://www.sternwheeler.com/ (Al Wheeler helped Larry with the wheel animation)

Locations of fire lookout towers and unused airfields:

Some users of cr_gorge.zip have asked for the locations of the lookout towers, which are indeed difficult to spot. Also, I found a "cluster" of three unused or abandoned airfields on the 1:24,000 topographic maps that are not included in the default FS9 airport database. I didn't make AFCAD2 files for these but added their grass runways according to the topo maps. Below are the coordinates for the three fields:

N45° 36' W122° 15'
N45° 36' W122° 12'
N45° 38' W122° 11'

Installation in FS2004:

Note: If you have Larry Silsbee's Yosemite Falls (yosemite_falls.zip) installed you need to remove an earlier version of his Multnomah Falls, which managed to find its way into that add-on. The file to be deleted is called "mult_creek_9.bgl" and can be found in the "scenery" subfolder of the Yosemite Falls add-on.

1) Extract "crg_upd1.zip" to a temporary directory, making sure that the "use folder names" option is enabled.

2) Move the contents of the "Effects" folder into your "FS9\Scenery\Effects" folder.

3) Move the contents of the "Traffic" folder into your "FS9\Scenery\world\scenery" folder.

4) Move the contents of the "US Columbia River Gorge landclass\scenery" folder into your "FS9\Addon Scenery\US Columbia River Gorge landclass\scenery" folder (or wherever you placed the original cr_gorge.zip folders). Click "Yes to All" in the "Confirm File Replace" window.

5) Move the contents of the "US Columbia River Gorge scenery\scenery" folder into your "FS9\Addon Scenery\US Columbia River Gorge scenery\scenery" folder. Click "Yes to All" in the "Confirm File Replace" window.

6) Move the contents of the "US Columbia River Gorge scenery\texture" folder into your "FS9\Addon Scenery\US Columbia River Gorge scenery\texture" folder.

7) Move the entire "ZZZA Vessel Sternwheeler Columbia Gorge" folder into your "FS9\Aircraft" folder.

8) Have a look at Larry's map - CRG waterfalls map.jpg - to get your bearings. The AI sternwheeler is easiest to find by flying west after takeoff from Cascade Locks State (KCZK).

9) Start up FS2004 and enjoy the new features!

----------------------------------------------------------------
How to Uninstall:

1) Follow the uninstall instructions provided with cr_gorge.zip

2) In addition, delete "ZZZA Vessel Sternwheeler Columbia Gorge" from your "FS9\Aircraft" and "Traffic_Sternwheeler_CRGorge.bgl" from your "FS9\Scenery\world\scenery" folder.

Many thanks to Larry Silsbee for his uncanny ability to pick his projects in the same spot as yours truly ;-)

Obviously, any digital data would be useless for FS enthusiasts without the wonderful free software tools for putting them into Flight Simulator. I am very grateful to the authors of the software I used, particularly Christian Fumey, Russel Dirks, and Dr. Peter Guth. Also, many thanks to everyone in the active Flight Simulator community for providing such great and diverse freeware add-ons and active discussion forums. Finally, thanks to J for her blank but simpatico stare at my time-consuming 'hobby' ;-)
